GILL SIMPSON
Founder
Gill has loved nature and wild spaces ever since she was a young adult, moving to Cape Town when she was 19. She then travelled overland through Africa to Europe, studying while she explored and worked her way around for a few years.
Back in South Africa she completed her degree and did a postgraduate degree in Marketing whilst maintaining her passion for environmental conservation and wild animals.
She enjoyed being a Media Director, but was constantly involved in environmental issues. Her breaks in her marketing career included a wonderful volunteer trip to Antarctica, and working as a lodge manageress in a private game reserve in Botswana.
Gill has been involved in animal rights issues for many years. Progress was slow, but animals are now accepted as sentient beings. Much still needs to be done: She advocates the right of animals to exist without human inflicted suffering; and for farming with allowance for, and tolerance towards, wildlife to minimize conflict.
Gill also completed her degree in teaching (PGCE) to become involved in environmental and sustainability education.
She lectured at a tertiary education institution, and did consulting, which included work on CSR/CSI; sustainability; and the Global Reporting Initiative.
She joined the Jane Goodall Institute (Chimp Eden) in January 2013, restarting the paying volunteer programme, doing educational talks, arranging accommodation and other logistics, plus marketing. Dr Jane Goodall continues to be a source of inspiration.
Gill came back to Cape Town knowing she had to make a positive difference. As there was no sanctuary for primates and most other wildlife species in the Western Cape, she made the decision to dedicate her life to the environment and wildlife.
She sold her beachfront apartment and started Wild Rescue NPC in 2015. After an extensive search for a suitable property, she found this nature reserve, although never dreamt her offer would be accepted. She only fully realised the value of this natural gem of biodiversity after she had spent some time on it.
We are the wild.
The feathered, the feral, the free
The hunters, the hoppers, the hiders
The one, the many, the gone
The past, the present, the possible
We are the future, we are your future
We are one.
Opening up shares in the Wild Goukou (Pty) Ltd, enables capital to support both the founder and the very indispensable project to which she is dedicating her life and savings.
Flavio Todaro
Shareholder, Ambassador
When Flavio Todaro, an Italian, first talked to Gill, back in 2015, he had just decided to put his South African farm on the market.
Gill visited the farm. She was impressed with the farm as it satisfied her requirements for starting a wildlife sanctuary. Flavio was very interested in her project, but unfortunately, they could not come to a deal. However, Flavio was so intrigued by her project, that he let her know he would be interested in buying a share in the sanctuary should she find a suitable farm.
As it turned out, some months later Gill sent Flavio pictures of this little gem near the Goukou River and Still Bay. Flavio fell in love with the farm, and confirmed he wanted in.
Flavio is excited about the next chapter in the story. As an investor and ambassador for the Wild Goukou vision, he cannot wait to return, and be part of a larger group of people who are as inspired and motivated to make a difference.

Follow Jenny on LinkedIn
Project manager, team leader responsible for conceptualisation, resourcing and implementation of the sustainability strategy roll-out.
Gill approached Jenny in 2015 for assistance with the authorisations needed to begin operation of Wild Rescue NPC, including an environmental determination from DEADP and a Spatial Development Plan approved by the Hessequa Municipality.
Jenny has a unique and highly relevant skill set acquired over 40 years, variously taking on roles that ranged from house design to multi-billion-rand infrastructure development manager in the public sector. In the course of this, she acquired a reputation for “being organised” and “getting things done”.
Her role at “the Farm” has been (a) to guard the architectural integrity of Hannes Zaaiman’s legacy, which includes follies that pleasantly surprise as you walk the Estate’s trails, and (b) to safeguard the health of the natural environment. She was instrumental in getting the alien vegetation clearing programme underway and, more recently, was designer, quantity surveyor and unskilled labour for a new structure to house the indigenous plant nursery.

Dave Barrow and Miguel Dorta Ruiz are the architectural wizards on the team.
After spending the first four days of his time on the project deeply immersed in fynbos culture, and honing his understanding of the Client’s needs through the daily rituals of food preparation, caring for the animals, and evenings around the dinner table, Dave produced an inspired design solution that fits right in.
In producing the digital models, Miguel actually ‘hand-planted’ the vegetation that you see in the artists’ impressions. We love the love they’ve given to this project.
Besides the love, Barland Studio bring a load of impressive technical experience essential for building within the natural environment and supply-chain constraints that we’re working with in this remote location.
In their 35 years of diverse experience in residential, commercial, industrial and community-based projects, Barland Studio acquired a commendable reputation for technical excellence and pragmatic responses to design and delivery. Their modus operandi is collaborative, often teaming up to work on projects with celebrated architectural practices, some of which attracted esteemed architectural awards.
